ベトナム戦争以前の、タイ、ベトナム、ラオス、カンボジアを巡る貴重な記録。
戦後間もない1950年代に、学術調査隊を海外に送るということが、いかに大変だったかが、実体験とともに語られる。
自動車会社から車を出してもらい、出版社などからは、記事を書くことを条件に援助をもらう、などなど。梅棹は、後に民博を創立することになるが、そうした”外交”に長けていたことが、この本からよく伺える。
タイという国について、”後進国だから”というイメージに捕われずに、官僚の優秀さについて、素直に賞賛している。ベトナムでも、国民の勤勉さについて、高く評価している。
元日本兵で、そのまま現地で暮らしている日本人にも遭遇する。時代性を強く感じる。
実際は、本当に大変な調査だったと思うが、梅棹のユーモア感あふれた文章は、実に楽しい旅行記のように読める。

Umesao disclose his backside work of scientific investigation like the negotiation with the governments of each countries and companies.
Umesao saw each countries without nay predictions. He admired Thailand's Bureaucratic system and Vietnam people's industriousness specially.
The journey was very tough actually. But Umesao described the journey with his fun and humor.
